Zoe’s Place Baby Hospice in Liverpool is a remarkable charity dedicated to providing palliative, respite, and end-of-life care to babies and young children aged 0–5 years who are living with life-limiting or complex conditions. The hospice offers specialist nursing, tailored therapy, and a warm, comforting environment for both the children and their families.

Ensuring a safe, reliable, and efficient heating and hot water system is critical for the day-to-day operation of the hospice. The plant room houses three Worcester Bosch GB-120 commercial boilers, which form the backbone of the facility’s heating and hot water provision

My Heating Engineer Limited was engaged to carry out the annual commercial boiler servicing at the hospice. The purpose of the service was to:

  • Ensure all three boilers were operating safely and in compliance with Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations.
  • Maximise efficiency to reduce running costs for the charity.
  • Identify and address any signs of wear, damage, or developing faults before they could lead to downtime.

Scope of Work

Pre-Service Safety Checks

  • Isolated gas and electrical supplies where required.
  • Completed visual inspection for leaks, corrosion, and external damage.
  • Checked ventilation and flue integrity to ensure compliance with manufacturer and regulatory requirements.

Full Strip-Down and Inspection

  • Removed and cleaned burners, heat exchangers, and ignition components.
  • Inspected and tested safety devices, including temperature and pressure controls.
  • Checked combustion chamber insulation for wear or damage.

Combustion Analysis

  • Measured flue gas emissions using calibrated analyser equipment to ensure boilers were burning efficiently and within safe limits.
  • Made adjustments where necessary for optimal performance.

System Functionality Testing

  • Confirmed correct operation of all boilers in sequence.
  • Checked integration with the building’s control systems and thermostats.
  • Verified hot water delivery and heating response times.

Final Compliance Checks & Certification

  • Completed the relevant Gas Safety Records for commercial appliances.
  • Supplied a service report outlining findings, efficiency results, and any recommended remedial works.
